Considered the “Holy Grail” when it comes to fashion and beauty trends, Cosmopolitan Magazine was called out for degrading black women’s beauty in a blog post that was published on their website. “21 Beauty Trends That Need To Die In 2015,” was published and Cosmo learned the hard way, when it came to social media backlash. In the article, it displays celebrities wearing certain beauty trends. One side said “R.I.P.” and the other said “Hello! Gorgeous,” readers seen that at least four women of color were placed on the “R.I.P.” side and all of the non-black women were praised for their beauty choices.
Readers took their thoughts and feelings to social media and called out the publication on their bad decision to post the article. You would think an editor would of caught the issue and fixed it before the post went live. Cosmopolitan obviously did not see the error in the post and released an apology.
“This article focuses on beauty trends with images that represent those trends. Some images have been taken out of context, and we apologize for any offense. Celebrating all women is our mission, and we will continue to work hard to do that.”
